BARRYROE 3-7 ST FINBARRS 1-9
Barryroe finally came of age as they took their first senior title when they captured the 2007 league crown as they defeated St Finbarrs in an entertaining contest in Ballincollig on Friday.
Goals are vital and can sometimes win games and with Barryroe grabbing three they carved out a four point victory. In their semi final clash with Cloughduv, Jennifer O’Leary showed her class and again in the final she was superb notching up four points of the Barryroe total.
Barrs had an  over reliance on Gemma O Connor who had a magnificent hour for the Barrs notching up a personal contribution of eight points and it was Gemma who struck four of their first half five with Valerie Maher contributing one as Barryroe lead  2-4 to 0-5 at the interval. Through the opening half Barryroe worked hard to lay the foundations for victory vital goals from Rosarie Holland and Elaine Mc Carthy helped keep their noses in front while Jennifer O Leary Rosemary Dineen and Rosarie Holland hit points as Barryroe made the early running.
O Conor and Isla Dineen traded early first half points and a Valerie Maher goal inside eight minutes of the restart had the lead down to two points. Fighting to hold on Barryroe again looked to Jennifer O’Leary and she duly obliged with a point to stretch it to three, a goal from Ger Collins again had Barryroe in control, Jennifer O’Leary pointed in reply to Gemma O’Connor for the Barrs.
Barrs battled to breakdown the Barryroe defence but they held solid. Gemma O’Connor pointed twice but the Barryroe girls stood firm denying St Finbarrs the goal they needed to stage a late rally.
And so a first senior crown for Barryroe since their elevation to senior status ten years ago but what a pity that this will possibly be the last time this season we will see the talented senior inter county player Jennifer O’Leary in action with the club as she plans to emigrate for twelve months in June, a huge loss to Barryroe and Cork.
