Referee Training proves a success in Leinster
On Monday 26th August, a very successful Referee Training event took place in Leinster GAA Offices, Portlaoise. The evening saw experienced referees and tutors of Karl O’Brien and Paul Shanahan deliver the courses to 86 participants.
We had First Whistle course delivered to 42 girls from across counties of Laois, Louth, Westmeath, Meath, Offaly, Kilkenny and Kildare. Here the girls learnt the basic rules, signalling and ethos of the Go Games structure, all receiving a whistle and official camogie rule book.
Simultaneously, 44 adult referees completed the Foundation Referee course under the guidance of Karl O’Brien in the upstairs conference room. This course being more detailed and with the use of match clips for discussion on rules and interpretations. Clubs were represented here by attendees from counties Laois, Offaly, Dublin, Westmeath, Louth, Kildare, Meath, Wicklow and Cork. There was tea and refreshments for all on the night and this gave everyone the opportunity to chat and discuss their interest and reason for getting into refereeing.
From here, all county boards will receive a list of participants from their counties and are encouraged to assign these newly qualified referees to their fixture’s schedules. We look forward to continuing the upskilling of these referees and encourage those who completed First Whistle to return to the Foundation course once eligible.
Congratulations to all who attend and many thanks to Leinster Camogie, in particular Linda Kenny, Linda Secretary and Sabrina Larkin, Leinster Participation and Growth Coordinator for organising the event. Final thanks to the tutors for their time, knowledge and passion in the delivery also and to Leinster GAA for the use of their fantastic venue.
