All-Ireland Minor B Camogie Championship 2009

 Limerick 3-10

Waterford 1-15

Limerick captured the 2009 minor B All-Ireland final with a pulsating injury time win over Waterford, five points down and time up, no one could believe the Limerick girls could pull this one out of the bag,  but reminiscent of what Offaly hurlers did to us in æ04,  player of the game Naomi Carroll pulled two balls from the skies over Mallow and crashed both of them past a helpless Waterford keeper.

Limerick went into this game hot favourites after emphatic wins over Kildare, Down and Wexford.

When Ref Dermot Connolly (Galway) threw the ball in at 7pm all previous form went out the window with Waterford hitting the ground running 1-01 to no score before Naomi got Limerick going with a point after ten minutes. Another point from Port Lairge corner forward Caithriona McGlone was quickly answered by Limerick’s number 13 Rachel Carmody, and from there until half time the sides traded points to leave the half time score Limerick 0-06 to Waterford 1-06 .

Phelim and Jim introduced two subs at half time Caroline Scanlon and Tara Hurley making way for Emma Kelly and Mairead Ryan, again the Deise girls were quick out the blocks out scoring Limerick by three points to one in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Phelim tried the bench again to see could he spur his charges into life and this time young Kristy Carroll got the ball rolling when she came on for Claire Casey.

She popped over two brilliant frees, another brace of points from star centre forward for Waterford Patricia Jackman restored the lead to five with 10 minutes left on the clock. The momentum was now with Waterford but not for long, up again stepped Naomi to crash a great ball to the back of the net, game on again.

Two points in it and only eight minutes to go, the large Limerick crowd could taste victory, unfortunately the girls from Waterford had not read the script, again Waterford took their points with ease , with Annette McAuliffe raising only one white flag for Limerick in the next eight minutes, 1-10 to 1-15 with 60 minutes on the clock and no one would have begrudged Waterford the victory.

But no one told our International Hockey player from Na Piarsaigh , two green flags from Naomi Carroll , who could believe it the Minor B All-Ireland title was going to Shannonside. Brillant stuff and for those of ye that might be  a bit superstitious the last time Limerick Camogie won an Ireland Final was in 2007, when the Senior’s captured the Senior B Title, the same year we played Kilkenny in the Hurling Final , the omens are good for Sunday.

Other stars for Limerick on the night were the full back line of Lisa Scanlon, Niamh Power and Aisling Enright, well done to all the girls who have given their all for Limerick Camogie over the last number of months, and congrats to all the management team for what they have done for the girls .

Limerick county board in association with Carmel Burke of Allseasonssport have a souvenir polo shirt on sale to commemorate this great victory, check the website for further info or contact Carmel.
