Arlene Watkins scored two first-half goals while Tina Hannon was magnificent as Offaly followed up their opening round Liberty Insurance Senior Camogie Championship Group 1 victory with a surprisingly comprehensive 2-14 to 1-7 win over Wexford at St Brendan’s Park, Birr.

The sides were level on three points apiece when Hannon’s delivery was finished to the net brilliantly by Watkins. A couple of points by captain Michael Morkan followed before a move involving Morkan and Linda Sullivan ended with Watkins’ grabbing her second major and the Faithful’s finest led by 2-6 to 0-6 at half time.

Wexford would have been expected to mount a stern resistance after the resumption but Offaly nipped any potential fightback in the bud with points from Morkan, Hannon and Sullivan. Morkan and Hannon stretched the advantage to 13 points but Wexford did manage to get a closing goal from Kate Kelly, who batted Shelley Kehoe’s delivery to the net late on.

Cork produced a storming second half as they put a depleted Clare to the sword by 5-19 to 0-10 at Páirc Uí Rinn. The Bannerwomen actually registered the opening score, with a pointed free by Róisín McMahon after seven minutes but a Briege Corkery goal helped the champions settle and the led by 1-5 to 0-5 at the interval.

Paudie Murray’s charges raised the tempo quite considerably in the latter period and Clare couldn’t live with them. Eimear O’Sullivan and Katrina Mackey plundered goals within a minute of one another and it was one-way traffic thereafter.

Mackey, Ashling Thompson, Hannah Looney and Orla Cotter all notched up points before Cork scored two late goals, including another from Mackey to complete the rout.

Niamh Mulcahy scored 1-14 in a losing effort against Wexford last week but the prodigious Limerick attacker was rewarded for a 13-point contribution this time around as the Shannonsiders proved too strong for Waterford in Kilmallock by 2-14 to 1-8.

Waterford came storming out of the traps and were six points clear approaching the break but two goals, the first from Cliona Lane, gave them a 2-4 to 1-6 lead.

If they were fortunate to have that one-point advantage, they left nothing to chance in the second half and Mulcahy made hay both from frees and from play to confirm the success.

In the Liberty Insurance Senior Camogie Championship Group 2, it was nip and tuck for a long way between Kilkenny and Dublin before the National League champions pulled away in the second half to win by 2-12 to 0-10 at St Lachtain’s, Freshford.

Ali Maguire scored five points for the visitors in the first half but Shelly Farrell’s goal ensured that Kilkenny had their noses in front at half time, 1-6 to 0-5.

Ann Downey’s charges possess plenty of firepower and while Maguire kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Metropolitans, points from Ann Dalton and a goal by Denise Gaule pulled the Noresiders clear.

Tipperary gave Galway a stern test last weekend and the league semi-finalists came away from Celtic Park in Derry with a 3-19 to 1-6 win.
