CAOIMHE COSTELLOE (LIMERICK)

The goals for 2016

“It was a huge step up in 2015. We thought we might cause one or two upsets and get to the quarter-finals at least but it was a huge learning curve. We’ve new management in place so hopefully John (Tuohy) and his team can take us one step further and develop what Joe (Quaid) left behind.

“We’re not just going to arrive on All-Ireland final day and win it but we have to progress and aim high. If we get to a quarter-final, that’s progress but who knows what will happen on a given day?”

Player to look out for

“I would say Caoimhe Lyons. It was her first year last year and I think this year, considering she had that big step up to senior, this could be her year. She could cause a few corner-backs a bit of trouble hopefully.”

The Olympics and European Championships

“I love the Olympics. It would be something down the line I would hopefully get to see. I am fascinated by the worldwide event that it is. It seems to draw everyone in and everyone becomes fascinated with it for a couple of weeks.
“I love the cross-country events and the boxing hopefully, will produce a few more gold medals for Ireland. Katie Taylor is unbelievable.”

KATIE POWER (KILKENNY)

The goals for 2016

“I’m just looking forward to getting back in with the girls. We’ve new management as well and I’m looking forward to working with Ann (Downey). We hope to do well but no-one knows what happens. We’re there or thereabouts but we’ve never got over the line. Right now, it’s about getting back, working hard and see where things take us after that.”

Player to look out for

“A good few came through last year. Davina Tobin was starting all year for the first time and is very good. She’s about 22 or 23 but she took her chance well. It was her first full year and she thrived so hopefully another year will bring her on again.”

The Olympics and European Championships

“I’d watch them all and have massive interest. During the summer we won’t get a chance to go over to the soccer but sure the whole country gets behind all the teams fairly well. It’s hard to know how the soccer team will go. It would be great if they got out of the group but I wouldn’t know much about the other teams.
“I love the sprints. I used to do athletics when I was young. (Usain) Bolt is great. It would be unreal if he did it again. He could if he keeps injury-free. He is a beast.”

LAURA TREACY (CORK)

The goals for 2016

“Well, 2015 couldn’t have gone much better. We won the Ashbourne in February which was a massive deal. The year flew from there and it was crazy how fast the All-Ireland came around again, nearly scary. It was an unbelievable year. I don’t know will any other year feel as good as this year in camogie terms.

“It will be weird when Ann (Downey), Conor (Phelan) and Paddy (Mullaly) are with Kilkenny. They’re training us away at the moment in college. They’ll know me inside-out and I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. When we go to the counties after the Ashbourne we won’t be friends for a while! But it’s the same with a lot of team-mates too. So you just look after your patch.

“We’ll be back with the county in January but with so many of us involved with colleges, it will probably not really get going until after that. We’ll be looking to win an All-Ireland again. We won’t be looking at the three-in-a-row. I’ll be looking at winning another All-Ireland in 2016.

I’d love to win a League and would absolutely love to win a county with Killeagh. That would be the perfect year, to win everything you can! I don’t think that happens to too many but they’re the aims: win the Ashbourne, win the League, win Munster, a county medal with my club and hopefully win another All-Ireland medal in September. We’ll set the standards high anyway and see how we get on!”

Player to look out for

“There’s a load of young girls. I’ve been playing with them all the way up along. Chloe Sigerson, from my own club, is a fantastic hurler. She’s minor again this year but I could see her coming in and being a star player with the intermediates. She’ll definitely be on the senior panel at some stage. Rachel O’Shea has been around. Linda Collins is another. The thing is to keep them hurling and interested until they get the chance. Paudie (Murray) will have seen them through club championships and he always finds a few new players to bring into the team to keep it fresh. I’m sure he’s a few in mind again.”

The Olympics and European Championships

“I’d sit down and watch any sport. My mam loves golf and I’d watch it with her. The Euros will keep us entertained for a few weeks. Ireland have a tough enough group but it’s a dream for them to be there. All they can do is aim to win it. If they’re not good enough on the day, they’re not, but once they perform to the best of their ability, they can come home happy.

“Usain Bolt would be who I’d focus on in the Olympics. He’s a great role model in the way he approaches things. He does the same routine and he’s always so calm, laughing with the crowd. He’s a great sportsman. I have always loved sprinting and the gymnastics as well.

“And sure we’ll all be rooting for Katie Taylor again. She’s a phenomenal athlete. She has done so much for women’s sport already. Hopefully she can keep it going.”
