Camogie Legends 2015

Saturday’s cold weather wasn’t enough to deter our intercounty camogie veterans from gathering at Na Fianna GAA Club on Mobhi Road for the 5th Annual Legends Tournament. This brilliant spectacle, kindly sponsored by The Croke Park Hotel, gives former inter-county camogie players, aged 35 and over, another chance to proudly wear their county jersey in action and rekindle their love for the game as well as old partnerships and rivalries.

The unique 7-a-side tournament played host to 6 teams including Dublin, Antrim, Cork, Galway, Derry and last year’s winners Tipperary. Dublin, Antrim and Cork competed in Group 1 while Derry, Galway and Tipperary faced-off in Group 2 with two teams from each group advancing to the Semi-finals. The bottom teams in each group would compete in the Shield Final.

At 10 minutes a half, the games were short, sharp, action-packed and full of goals. Below are the results from the group stages that saw Dublin and Cork progress from Group 1 and Galway and Tipperary from Group 2;

Moving onto the Semi-finals where Galway eased past Dublin, and Tipperary sealed an all-group 2 final by beating Cork. This meant that last year’s champions Tipperary, would face Galway, who had beaten Tipperary in the group stages, in the Legends 2015 Final. In the Shield Final, Antrim met Derry in an Ulster camogie clash, Antrim restored pride for group 1 by scraping a win over their neighbours.

It was then time for a highly anticipated final clash between Galway and Tipperary. Having averaged 4 goals each per game thus far in the tournament, the Mobhi Road crowd expected a huge scoreline. However, the teams were far closer-matched than expected and Tipperary managed to secure a 2 point win on a 2-6 to 3-1 scoreline. Tipperary lifted the Biddy Phillips Cup for the second year running and Emily Haden was awarded Player of the Tournament. We’d like to thank all of the competing teams, The Croke Park Hotel for sponsoring the event and Na Fianna GAA for hosting the tournament!
