CAMOGIE ROUND-UP

Offaly got their Division Two national league campaign off to a winning start with a 2-13 to 0-3 victory away to Kilkenny on Sunday afternoon.

Last year’s Junior All-Ireland champions had a commanding 1-6 to 0-0 lead at half-time with Karen Nugent netting a goal in the 5th minute and points coming courtesy of Elaine Darmody (2), Tina Hannon (2), Arlene Watkins (1) and Nugent.

Joachim Kelly’s side were the more cohesive outfit and found scores easier to come by. Elaine Darmody added four further points along with Arlene Watkins (0-1), Michelle Gleeson (0-1) and Jean Brady (1-1) –  the goal coming moments from full-time. Lucinda Gahon (0-1), Anna Farrell (0-1) and Tara Warren were on target for Kilkenny.

Claire Grogan led the way for Tipperary with a personal tally of 2-7, 2-5 of which was from open play as they defeated Antrim 2-10 to 0-4 in their opening Division Two encounter on Sunday. Grogan grabbed a goal in the closing stages of each half while Elaine Hough (0-1) and Geraldine Kinane (0-2) also pointed to give the Munster side a convincing win over an Antrim team which had no answer to a superior Tipperary forward line. Racquel McCary (0-2), Sharon Graham (0-1) pointed for Antrim with Emma McMullin notching up a point from a superbly taken sideline cut. In the remaining Division Two fixture Wexford defeated Waterford 5-8 to 2-7 while Limerick had a one point victory over Down winning 0-13 to 2-6.

Meath bounced back from last week’s defeat to Laois with a hard fought 1-9 to 0-5 victory over Armagh in round two of the Division Three national league.

Jane Dolan was to the fore contributing 1-7 overall (2fs) with Jenny Rispin and Sinead Hackett adding a point each. Armagh’s scores came from Bernie Murray (0-2), Joanne Mallon (0-1), Paula Mallon (0-1) and Colette McSorley (0-1). Meanwhile, Laois continued their rich scoring form notching up 3-16 to 0-1 against Dublin at O’Moore Park while Roscommon defeated Kildare 2-5 to 0-7.
