Wexford 2-10

Antrim 0-11

Despite the comfortable five point margin in the end, Wexford received a searching test from Antrim before getting the afternoon off to the perfect start for the Slaneysiders in Parnell Park today when they claimed the Division Two title.

After being level on no less than six occasions, the Purple and Gold finished strongly in the closing quarter following a wonderful goal from Ciara O’Connor – the Rathnure girl was one of three sisters on the team and also a sibling of Division One captain Aoife.

The scoreboard was level at the break following a largely entertaining opening 30 minutes, 0-8 to 1-5, and central to the Antrim play was skipper Jane Adams who was her team leader firing five of their eight points.

The Wexford goal, which arrived on 16 minutes, came courtesy of full forward Evelyn Quigley. With little separating the teams following the re-start, the Leinster side slowly got on top following points from Louise Codd and Eimear O’Connor.

Holding a slender 1-8 to 0-9 lead, Ciara O’Connor’s goal gave them the impetus to push ahead. They managed to hold the advantage with goalkeeper Helena Jacob also proving her worth with a point-blank save from Antrim sub Maread Graham.

Wexford had the more balanced 15, and held out for the five point advantage despite two late scores from Adams and Michaela Convery. Yet, Antrim – the Division Three title holders – couldn’t get through for the goal they so badly needed.
