I’m Kathrin from Germany and I have been playing Camogie for over 1.5 years now. When I moved to Ireland it was very important for me to find new friends and integrate into my new home country.
Just a month later I saw my first Hurling match in Dublin and was completely fascinated by this sport. I really wanted to try it out and looked around for GAA clubs that offer beginner adult teams. By chance I found out that my friend Elaine had joined “Camán n’ Chats” at St. Annes a half year ago and a week later I was attending my first training session. From the very beginning I knew that this was my sport and felt super passionate about it. It is an amazing sport with a lot of different skills needed, it’s super-fast and has a very long history. I have never played something like that before.
But the best part of it is my team, the people in the club and the whole GAA and Camogie community. After a couple of weeks, I was fully integrated and I didn’t just find new friends, I found a whole supportive lovely community and it made me feel at home. I’m very grateful and proud to be part of such a great team. I’m especially grateful for my amazing trainers Louise, Ashling and Glenda, who put in a lot of passion, energy and their own time to create and grow this team at St Annes and give people like me the opportunity to learn Camogie.
My experience in Social Camogie is that it doesn’t matter who you are, where you are from, your age or if you have ever played Camogie before – everyone is very welcome and everyone can learn. I highly recommend everyone who moves to Ireland to just give it a try. There is no better way to meet new people, get to know a bit of Irish culture and to have great fun.

Ich bin Kathrin aus Deutschland und spiele jetzt seit über 1,5 Jahren Camogie. Als ich nach Irland ausgewandert bin, war es für mich sehr wichtig, neue Freunde zu finden und mich in meinem neuen Heimatland zu integrieren.
Nur einen Monat später sah ich mein erstes Hurlingspiel in Dublin und war total fasziniert von diesem Sport. Ich wollte es unbedingt ausprobieren und schaute mich nach GAA-Clubs um, die Anfänger Mannschaften für Erwachsene anbieten. Durch Zufall erfuhr ich, dass meine Freundin Elaine vor einem halben Jahr bei “Camán n’ Chats” in St. Annes eingetreten war, und eine Woche später nahm ich an meinem ersten Training teil. Von Anfang an wusste ich, dass das mein Sport ist, und ich war sofort Feuer und Flamme dafür. Es ist ein erstaunlicher Sport, der viele verschiedene Fähigkeiten erfordert, superschnell ist und eine sehr lange Geschichte hat. So etwas habe ich vorher noch nie gespielt.
Aber das Beste daran ist mein Team, die Leute im Verein und die ganze GAA- und Camogie-Gemeinschaft. Nach ein paar Wochen war ich voll integriert, und ich habe nicht nur neue Freunde gefunden, sondern eine unterstützende, tolle Gemeinschaft, in der ich mich wie zu Hause fühle. Ich bin sehr dankbar und stolz darauf, Teil eines so großartigen Teams zu sein. Besonders dankbar bin ich meinen tollen Trainern Louise, Ashling und Glenda, die viel Leidenschaft, Energie und ihre eigene Zeit investieren, um dieses Team in St. Annes aufzubauen und Leuten wie mir die Möglichkeit zu geben, Camogie zu lernen.
Meine Erfahrung bei Social Camogie ist, dass es keine Rolle spielt, wer du bist, woher du kommst, wie alt du bist oder ob du schon einmal Camogie gespielt hast – jeder ist herzlich willkommen und jeder kann es lernen. Ich empfehle jedem, der nach Irland zieht, es einfach mal auszuprobieren. Es gibt keinen besseren Weg, um neue Leute kennenzulernen, ein bisschen über die irische Kultur zu erfahren und viel Spaß zu haben.
